Judges Comments:

“The Williams Inn is a modern interpretation of a traditional vernacular. The variety of modeling in this Connecticut granite gives a sense that this is not a singular stone but a successful presentation of a single stone in a variety of cuts, textures and applications. Perfect material selection for the campus and the surrounding area. Detailing of the Ashlar pattern, especially at the copping, is beautiful. Congratulations to Connecticut Stone.  and Installation.”

Judges Comments:

“The desire of the client to create something so palatial is really quite special. Choice of materials and execution are top shelf.  A mastery of installation, with 1/16 - inch jointing and precise book matched detailing using heavily veined stone. Despite the eclectic and extensive use of natural stone, the project deserves credit for its non-disdaining ability in the use of salvaged stone repurposed as tiles, applied appropriately in smaller rooms of the home. Congratulations to Carnevale & Lohr.  We would also like to congratulate NSI member companies Custom Building Products, Menzi Marmi and Trade International for their involvement.

Judges Comments:

“This 19-tread solid basalt “floating” stair is an engineering masterpiece. It becomes a unique solution for the addition of this showpiece element in the home’s renovation, earning high marks from the jury for technical merit. The engineering is quite compelling and complex, especially with the use of a tension cable system to hold it together. Stone fabrication required precise coordination and care to ensure cable alignment. We’ve not seen stairs put together like this before! Congratulations to Pico Engineering.  We would also like to congratulate NSI member company Precision Stone for their involvement.”

Judges Comments:

“Weighing nearly 5-1/2 tons, this full-sized reproduction of the ancient Grecian statue housed in the Louvre was crafted as an homage and donated to the Island of Samothrace. It wasn’t a design decision to copy a masterpiece, but rather one of skilled execution. The artisans set out to replicate an iconic, handcrafted sculpture using contemporary 3-D scanning and CNC machinery, and they were successful.

“This project is remarkable in the translation of technology to such intricate and hand-tooled detail, and its exquisite stone choice and management of the rare, blemish-free material.

Congratulations to F.H.L.I. Kiriakidis Marbles-Granites.”

Judges Comments:

“We appreciated the choice of stone size and shape and the combination of colors. The execution was beautiful. Limestone columns contrast nicely with the marble floors. Pattern and jointing are just terrific. It’s interesting to see how ecclesiastical work is trending toward more color, making traditional elements more modern. Congratulations to Booms Stone Company. We would also like to congratulate Natural Stone Institute member company Bybee Stone Company, Duncan G. Stroik Architect, North Carolina Granite Corporation and Polycor Inc. for their involvement.”

Judges Comments:

“A mastery of an incredible amount of stone all on a radius with different and difficult geometry. With all the variegation and veining and all the wedge shaped cuts, it takes a certain ability and a long time to make them look right. Craftsmanship and control of the natural stone is incredible. The installer exhibited exceptional execution. Congratulations to Twin Stone Designs and Installation.”
